Projects

Here are some things you might find interesting:

Research

I am currently working as a scientific researcher at the Northern Research Institute (Norut), based in Tromsø. My main efforts are in developing systems for visualizing georeferenced data collected from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) combined with other static or dynamic datasets such as elevation and raster data. The system is being built for use in realtime during flight and for post-mission data analysis.

Before starting at Norut, I was a Postdoc attached to the Verdione project at the Department of Computer Science, University of Tromsø, Norway, after successfully defending my Ph.D. in Computer Science on November 6th 2009. I was supervised by Professor Otto J. Anshus and co-supervised by Associate Professor John Markus Bjørndalen. In 2008 and early 2009, I spent a year visiting Professor Kai Li and Assistant Professor Olga Troyanskaya at Princeton University as a visiting graduate student. My research interests include scalable distributed systems, high-performance computing and human-computer interaction. My research environment consists of a wall-sized, high-resolution tiled display (a display wall) with lots of supporting hardware including a cluster of computers, cameras and microphones.

One of my research projects has been to build a device-free, scalable, multi-touch input system for wall-sized displays. While the system's design and implementation is documented in several papers, I have also decided to make a briefer description of the system available here. You can read about "Interaction Spaces: A camera-based system for scalable multi-touch 2D and 3D interaction on wall-sized, high-resolution displays" here.

You can read more about this system in my doctoral dissertation, which I have made available online. The dissertation is titled: "Device-Free Interaction and Cross-Platform Pixel Based Output to Display Walls" and is a 6.2 MB download.

Videos

This is a list of my videos currently on YouTube. The videos demonstrate various aspects of my research.

Realtime visualization of flights with unmanned aircraft - This video demonstrates Norut Geo Viz, a system I have built to enable visualization of georeferenced and time-stamped datasets on a virtual globe. The system is used to monitor unmanned aerial vehicles during flight, and for rapid data analysis after landing. More info about the system is available at ngv.norut.no.

The 22 Megapixel Laptop - This video demonstrates the 22 Megapixel Laptop, a system I built to utilize the high resolution of our display wall directly from my laptop. Virtual displays are created by a kernel extension running on a MacBook Pro, whose pixels are then shared using a VNC-like system with the computers driving the projectors of the display wall. You can read more on the dedicated 22 Megapixel Laptop page.

Navigating a 13.3 gigapixel image on a 22 megapixel display wall - This video demonstrates the Interaction Spaces system and WallScope systems. The Interaction Spaces system is used to enable touch-free navigation of a very high-resolution image of Tromsø taken by photographer Eirik Helland Urke. The WallScope system, built by Tor-Magne Stien Hagen, takes care of visualizing the image data with high performance in response to movements detected by the Interaction Spaces system. You can read more about this project on the gigapixel page.

Device-Free Interaction Spaces - This video demonstrates the Interaction Spaces system, which enables 3D multi-touch interaction with high-resolution, wall-sized displays. A wedge-shaped interaction space is created in front of the display wall using eight cameras. Each camera's field of view is divided into a set of slices. The position of objects are detected in 1D within each slice. The 1D position is used to triangulate the position of objects in 2D for each slice, before the 2D objects are consolidated into 3D objects.

Three years of "M" on a display wall - This video shows the touch-free interface I have developed being used to navigate a large collection of comics.

Hybrid vision- and sound-based interaction on display walls - This video complements the paper we published at the HCI workshop in conjunction with ICCV in 2007. It demonstrates how we can create a completely device-free interface to the display wall, while still retaining the ability to reach far-away objects.
