Hitchhiking tips
This will be updated soon. Refer to my link-page aswell.
"Hitchiquette"
I do have some rules I stricty apply to my hitchhiking. Some I have learnt
by experience:
- I don't hitchhike if I've been eating garlic, I don't drink while hitchhiking,
and I try to keep as clean
as possible. If camping, I try to get a shower, change clothes and eventually
wash some clothes at a camping site, hotel, public bath or at friends.
- I try to conversate, but only if the driver seems interested. I'm trying
to find out what could interest the driver.
- When the driver stops to drink coffee or anything similar, I always sit
down first at a free table. Then it's up to the driver whether he'll join me
or not. I did a major mistake at my last trip, the driver found somebody he
knew at a place, and I joined them. That wasn't very polite, I realized at once
that my presence stopped their conversation.
- I shouldn't hitchhike when I'm in a hurry. It's not always that easy. I guess
I did a mistake last time; I hitchhiked with a driver that was going the same
way as me for a very long distance. He had good time, and wanted a lot of
coffee stops and so on. It was unintentional, but by staring at my watch
several times, and by driving fast when I was driving, I kept stressing him
up. It wasn't very polite, I guess.
- I try to remember to say "Thank you" when leaving the car.
